Mature skin (think 50’s plus) functions differently to when we were younger, so it requires skincare that addresses its needs ’ combatting dryness, firmness and elasticity (collagen depletion), and slower cell turnover means skin needs help with exfoliation and luminosity. To make the most of your skin at this age, treat it gently with rich, moisturising cleansers, super rich, water-attracting creams, exfoliate once a week and add in facial oils for night time care. One of the most important parts of your regime is sun protection. Sun spots (also known as age spots) are pigment cells that overproduce due to sun exposure and give the telltale spots of older skin, especially seen on the hands.
What to look for in skincare for mature skin
To target dryness, look for Hyaluronic Acid - its ability to hold 1000ml of water per gram makes it one of the skincare industry’s go-to skin plumping ingredients. Researchers have also discovered Hyaluronic Acid to be directly correlated to measured increases in skin moisture. Microscopic skin surface analysis shows a decrease in wrinkles and increased skin smoothness. This could be the first time you’re actually looking to have a plump face ’ when it suddenly goes, especially from the lower part of your face, you’ll be wanting an ingredient to plump up as much as possible.
Also look for ingredients that support skin renewal and fight wrinkles such as Vitamin A & Collage. I love the Pai Rosehip Oil for this because it contains natural Vitamin A. It uses high levels of Trans-Retinoic Acid that are delivered directly to the epidermis (the outer layer of a cell) which then converts to Vitamin A, that helps with with the skins natural healing process. The Dream Repair Cellular Serum from The Beauty Chef uses advanced science to naturally stimulate collagen (more on this serum below!)
Don't forget to use sunscreen (and it is never too late to start), this can help to lighten freckles over time (think about how freckles fade in the winter and come back in the summer due to sun exposure).
How serums can benefit mature skin
Serums play more than a supporting role in skincare ’ they often have a higher level of active ingredients than a moisturiser, and can add so much more to your specialised skincare regime especially when targeting mature skin. Here's what to look for in your serum:
Hydration ’ La Mav Hyaluronic Acid Hydra-Max Serum is bursting with, you guessed it, hyaluronic acid, and is designed to moisturise, soothe and protect dry and dull skin. Added Co-enzyme Q10 helps to visibly plump for a firmer complexion.
Renewal & regeneration ’ Dr Alkaitis Organic Ageless Facial Elixir is an investment for your skin, formulated with an exotic blend of the rarest and most potent regenerative and restorative ingredients found in nature. This all-natural, plant based elixir works to support cell renewal, strengthen the skin's natural barrier, refine pores, visibly smooth the skin's surface and promote a healthy golden glow. Exactly what 50+ skin could do with.
Dr Hauschka Regenerating Serum is formulated for mature skins and works to firm, lift, and tone the complexion as well as minimise fine lines with Quince Seed, Red Clover and Clover Blossom.
Collagen boosting ’ The Beauty Chef Dream Repair Cellular Serum has been reformulated with even more anti-oxidants (19 to be precise) for skin repair and rejuvenation, and now includes a rare microalgae - Cylindrotheca Fusiformis with skin enhancing super powers to work in every anti-ageing way possible, including a 17.2% increase in just 72 hours (in vitro testing by Beauty Chef).
Age Spots - The 100% Pure Dark Spot Remover uses Ferment Sake and Matsutake Mushrooms (which are known for their brightening effects) to reduce dark spots as well as age spots. A great natural alternative to those harsh chemical based skin lighteners and bleaching agents!
Great skin care routines for mature skin
For optimum results, you can’t beat using a range of complementary products, designed to work together. Here are some of my favourite anti-ageing ranges:

Weleda Evening Primrose range may help restore elasticity and texture to mature skin. The Age Revitalising Concentrate may be ideal for revitalising and firming, hydrating and reactivating cell renewal, while Age Revitalising Eye and Lip has been specifically formulated with Organic Evening Primrose Seed Oil to target laugh lines and wrinkles on the delicate skin around the eyes and lips. Weleda clinical tests show that 83% of women reported the area around eyes looks smoother and 74% reported reduced deep lines and wrinkles (Weleda published results of self-assessment after 28 days)
