Why should we use natural cleaning products?
If you use harsh mainstream cleaning products, there could be up to 62 toxic chemicals found in your home. Using harsh cleaning products can actually make the air inside your home polluted with irritating airborne particles, often caused by the fumes from harsh, chemical based cleaners. Everything you spray, scrub or wash comes into contact with your skin and can be inhaled, potentially causing skin reactions and increasing the symptoms of asthma and respiratory conditions. We can actually spend up to approximately four years of our lives cleaning, so using natural products is extremely important for our families’ health and wellbeing.
What are the ingredients to look out for in mainstream products?
There are eight chemical ingredients commonly found in mainstream cleaning products, including Phthalates, Butoxyethanol, Perchloroethylene, Ammonia, Chlorine, Triclosan, Sodium Hydroxide and Quaternary Ammonium. These ingredients are used as foaming agents and disinfectants and are found in things like kitchen and bathroom cleaners, dishwashing liquid and even hand soap. Over time, inhaling or handling these chemicals can negatively affect your health by exposing you to potentially hormone and immune system disrupting synthetic substances. These ingredients can also end up in our waterways, harming natural marine life and damaging the environment. Choosing green cleaning products can reduce exposure to irritating chemicals, decrease the risk of asthma attacks and is just so much better for the environment!
