What is a cleansing balm?
As the name suggests, cleansing balms really do just look like a solid balm in tub or bar form. Firm to begin with, they warm up with the heat of your skin and melt into an oil to thoroughly remove makeup, grime and bacteria from the surface of the skin and from deep within the pores. These balms have a creamy, oily consistency as they are really rich in natural plant oils, so unlike some cleansers they actually hydrate and replenish the skin rather than stripping it dry, making them ideal for dry, mature and sensitive skin types.
How to use a cleansing balm
To use a cleansing balm, scoop out a small amount from the pot. In the palm of your hand, rub your fingers together until the balm has melted, then start massaging it into your skin. You'll feel it melting into a creamy oil as it makes contact with the warmth of your skin. Massage it in until you've covered your entire face, and if you're wearing makeup you'll be able to actually see it melting your makeup off. Then take a warm, dampened muslin cloth and gently wipe the balm off your face to reveal clean, baby soft skin.
Best natural cleansing balms
100% Pure Blood Orange Cleansing Balm
One of my favourite cleansing balms is the 100% Pure Blood Orange Cleansing Balm. This beautiful creamy balm smells delicious, and it contains Avocado Oil, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Beeswax and Blood Orange Essential Oil to really hydrate the skin while it cleans. Ideal for all skin types, including dry and sensitive skin, this purifying balm sweeps away makeup, grime and excess oil and helps to remove dead skin cells.
Happy Skincare 'Cloud 9' Deep Cleansing Balm
The Happy Skincare 'Cloud 9' Deep Cleansing Balm is another great option for all skin types as it contains soothing Aloe Vera, Shea Butter, Hemp Seed Oil and Macadamia Oil to wipe away makeup, sunscreen, dirt and grime while nourishing the skin. Vegan and Australian made, this deeply hydrating formula leaves skin soft, fresh and supple, and it can even be used as a moisturising hair treatment or barrier cream.
Ethique's SuperStar! Cleansing Balm and Makeup Remover
The Ethique SuperStar! Cleansing Balm and Makeup Remover is a little different as it comes in a bar form, so I love this one for travelling or when you're really pressed for time. To use this balm you just need to wet the bar under the tap for a moment, then rub into your hands to transfer the product from the bar to your skin, then apply to the face in circular motions. Vegan and Gluten Free, this one may be particularly good for dry skin as it contains hydrating Coconut Oil, Cocoa Butter and Kokum Butter for a rich, creamy consistency, and it acts as a cleanser, makeup remover and moisturiser all in one.
Skin Juice Smudge Budge Face and Eye Cleansing Balm
For removing heavy makeup and stubborn waterproof mascaras, I can't go past the Skin Juice Smudge Budge Face and Eye Cleansing Balm. This hardworking balm dissolves makeup including mascara and eyeliner, and it's so gentle on the skin that it's even safe enough to use around the sensitive and so easily irritated eye area. With a nourishing base of Sunflower Oil, Mango Seed Butter and Coconut Oil, this nutrient rich cleanser delivers a boost of antioxidants from Pomegranate, Carrot, Berries, Tomato and Pumpkin.
MOA The Green Balm
The MOA Green Balm is another favourite of mine for its multi-purpose qualities. As well as being an effective cleanser, you can may also use this balm to soothe rashes, minor skin conditions, cuts and grazes, treat dry and chapped lips and cuticles, athletes foot and even stretch marks and scarring! Hydrating Coconut, Sweet Almond and Sunflower Seed Oils deeply moisturise the skin, while Yarrow and Tea Tree may help support the skin's natural healing and regenerative process.
Life Basics Organic Muslin Facial Cloths 3 Pack
Ideal for use with any cleansing balm, the Life Basics Muslin Facial Cloths are made from soft, breathable Organic Cotton and help to deepen the cleansing action by lightly exfoliating the skin. Light and quick-drying, they're great for travel and can be machine washed. After each use, rinse cloth thoroughly and hang to dry or lay flat.
